The Eastcoast Greenway Project

Greenway Banner

The Eastcoast Greenway is a grand concept of creating a contiguous trail from Maine to Key West, Fla that is decicated to hikers and bikers. Parts of the contiguous path already exist and were built by the local jurisdictions. It will pass through many states along the way. Each state and local jurisdiction will own and maintain their respective segments and decide what the design parameters will be.

The 2300 mile course will afford hikers and bikers the opportunity to travel through all of the Atlantic seaboard states, including Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusettes, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Delaware. Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. Many local planners have promulgated their segments based on the ultimate design of the contiguous path. For instance, Maryland already has the NCR TRail, the BWI Loop and the Baltimore Annapolis Trail in place. Altough the exact path of the trail is still undetermined and far from completely funded, many localities have continued their efforts independent of whether their trail will ever connect with this major corridor.

Athens, Georgia funded and built a multi-million greenway project along the Oconee River that will continue southward to Lexington as Georgia plans are pushed forward. this segment is not planned as part of the core project but could provide a substantial source of users primarily from the Atlanta region.
